THE CHARACTER;
Series/Fandom: Once Upon A Time
Character's Name: Belle
Character's Sex: Female
Character's Age: Unknown
Canon point: Season One, End of Episode Twelve “Skin Deep Paopu”

Abilities:
Belle has no physical or magical attributes to speak of. She is a petite woman and while she is not a princess in the fairytale land, she is the daughter of a nobleman ruler so has never had much need to learn means in which to protect herself, although that is not to say she isn’t a strong woman.

There are two things that one could call ‘abilities’ of hers. One, is to put up with the ridiculous sentence she’s been made to face by having been forced into servitude to the most hated man in all of the Fairytale Land; Rumpelstiltskin, although this is mostly blamed upon herself since she is the one whom agreed to the deal, in the end. The other is that her love for him, as surprising though it may be that she developed feelings for the beast, and his for her in return is known as the most powerful magic in all the land — true love, a force that can break any curse most often displayed in the form of a kiss.

Belle attempted to free ‘the beast’ from his curse by using such ‘magic’ in a kiss, but, it was taken the wrong and landed her within the confinements of Rumpelstiltskin’s dungeons briefly before her release back to her father in the imp’s anger.

Strengths:
Having no magic beyond her love for the most unlikely of men, Belle is not among the kind of folk that others would have to worry about when it comes to skill and ability, or the levels thereof. Also, where she possesses no skills for weaponry, such as sword combat that many Fairytalians are common with, she is no threat on a physical level, either. Belle is simply a normal human being.

That being said, she has an incredible resolve for not having broken down when she was made to go away with Rumpelstiltskin. In fact, it was her choice to agree to the deal to protect her people and her father. While living with the strange man, rather than be bitter or feel downtrodden, she made light of the situation, deciding to keep things light and nice around the otherwise dull and dusky castle.

Even when offered her freedom, the young lady returned to the castle. Her strength lies in her senses of duty and her seemingly never bending kindness, even toward those one may not think deserve it. In fact when she is asked why she was so easily swayed into making the deal with the imp-man of Fairytale Land, she explains that it was her desire to be more than just a helpless girl, her want to be a strong person and a hero of sorts that led her to join him in his kingdom.

Weaknesses:
Arguably, Belle’s weaknesses beyond those of her physical incapability’s lie with her feelings for the two most important men in her life; her father and her captor.

Her willingness to leave her father’s side to help him protect his people is what caused her problems in the first place, but as most daughters; she would have done whatever it took to help him. One could also say it may have been in curiosity that she chose to join Rumpelstiltskin, but it remains that she did it for her family, most notably her father. In choosing to go, she would keep her father in good standing with the people of their town.

While Belle is cocky enough to speak up against her captor, and even willing to get close enough to share stories and even hopes with him, she was still a servant in his home. Strong willed though she may be, she lacked the ability to make many choices for herself and was bound to do whatever the man asked of her to do and in the end, the love that she found for him ultimately caused her separation from him.

Background:
Belle’s first appearance is well into her adulthood, as such there is nothing much to go off of for her childhood, but having grown up the daughter of a nobleman, one can assume that it was a good life she had. Sometime before the appearance made within the television show, she was made to be betrothed to Gaston, a man whom Belle has no love for and sees as shallow. It is during a war council that the decision to send for the dealmaker is formed and while the battle was growing more and more hopeless, the leaders of the little village tell themselves that Rumpelstiltskin is not going to show up.

Moments afterward he does.

A deal is offered; the rescue of Maurice’s village and in return, he wants Belle. Quickly, Maurice — along with Gaston whom assumes he means as a wife — turns down the deal, unwilling to lose his daughter to whom he calls a beast. As the dealmaker is leaving, Belle finds her voice and proclaims that she will go with him on the terms that her friends, family and the village will be guaranteed safety. Telling her father, who is disinclined to acquiesce to her decision, that neither nor Gaston get to make choices for her, Belle bids them farewell and is soon swept away into a new life with ‘the beast.’

In the beginning, her ‘room’ is a dungeon cell and she’s made to leave it only when she’s tending to the duties that Rumpelstiltskin has laid out for her, during which time she drops a teacup at a rather grim joke he says to her, chipping it. She apologizes for it, to which he replies: “It’s just a cup.” After some months of living with him, she is given a slight bit more freedom around his estate. Near the spring is when her romance for him begins to bud, he is as always, spinning straw into hay while she is cleaning, chatting with him and finding little laughs in his jolly madness. She struggles to open a curtain that has been nailed down in order to block out the sun’s shine and falls into his arms. Once he releases her to stand again, he tells her that she need not fix the drapery, he’ll get used to the light.

The two continue to grow close, becoming something of friends with one another, learning things about each other until one day Belle mentions that in her cleaning she’s seen some clothing much smaller in size than that of which he wears, begging the question of whether they were his at a younger age or if there was a child. She is more than willing to listen to her master telling her that there was a child and a wife at one point, but that he’s lost them. Belle curiously asks what happened as she wants to get to know him better since he will be the only person she knows in the whole of her life, being that she cannot leave Dark Castle, but they are interrupted by a knock on the door.

Left while Rumpelstiltskin answers it, she is surprised to see him come back with a rose, telling her that it was an old woman selling flowers. Unbeknownst to her, it was her former fiancé, Gaston, whom was only seconds before magically altered into the rose offered to her. She then clips the stem and sets it into a vase while talking to Rumpel about herself per his questioning. When the matter of her fiancé arises, she tells her master that it was an arranged marriage and that she could never really love or marry someone as superficial as Gaston. She tells him that she had hopes of seeing the world, but is fine with knowing that won’t ever happen now that she is locked in his servitude. The dealmaker then offers her a deal; he will share more of his son and his past with her if she goes into town to fetch him more straw for his spinning wheel. Shocked at his allowing her to leave, she asks why he trusts her to come back to which he says “I expect I’ll never see you again.”

At first, she hadn’t planned to return to him, however while she’s walking on the path a carriage happens to come by, and inside of it is the Evil Queen, Regina. Playing friendly, she emerges from the confinements and walks the path with Belle, asking what she’s running from. Easily, the Queen deduces that she’s fleeing from her master, whom she loves, and tells her that the evil that Belle sees within him can be broken by true love’s kiss. Swayed by her, Belle eventually returns in the evening with her basket filled with straw, smug at the surprise that her master tries to hide from her return.

They sit to talk about his past, as per his deal. He asks her why she returned and she tells him that something changed her mind — she then leans forward to kiss him. As predicted, the kiss begins to change him back to his former self, but it’s not long enough to complete the transformation. She excitedly tells him to kiss her again because it’s working, but instead he turns on her, claiming that she is working for the Queen and that he knew she could not care for him. Desperate for him to listen to her pleas that what he says is not true, Belle continues to try and make him see that as the spell was working however he only tells her that no one could love him, and locks her in his dungeon.

Days later, Rumpelstiltskin enters her cell and tells her to leave. Before she does, she tells him she thinks he’s cowardly for being unwilling to realize she could love him, telling him he will regret it forever and the only things he’ll have left to live with are an empty heart and a chipped cup.

Appearance:
Belle is a slender woman of typical height, with long brown hair that typically falls into rather stylishly large, if not neat, curls just above her chest. The darkness of her hair and eyes contrast with her fair skin rather nicely, and she typically dresses in a light blue dress with white sleeves.

Personality:
Belle is something of a dreamer, having had big fantasies and dreams of one day being a hero, or at least being able to say that she wasn’t just the run of the mill nobleman’s daughter. She is truly a self-sacrificing person, easily forgoing her own dreams and hopeful future, losing all of her personal freedom as price for her village’s safety. If she inwardly feels some sadness for her losses, one would never know, as a smile is ever constant on her face — save for the brief moments of seriousness that she may find herself sharing with her newfound ‘boss.’

And, with a charming and sweet personality, it’s no wonder that even the darkest of people fall for her ever present kindness. The woman is something of an intellect; she seems to frown upon tradition and has a desire to be more modern with certain aspects of her life, which in turn affects most of her decisions made. She’s vaguely and slightly a bit of a feminist, being almost outraged when both her father and her at the time fiancé were attempting to make choices for her, although one could easily argue she simply wanted control over her own situation. Had she really been such a feminist, she would not have agreed to be a maid to a man.

Despite her situation, Belle tends to remain resilient and most often in chipper spirits. True, even the most resilient of people will find themselves longing for their freedom to do with as they’d please, but Belle, like Rumpelstiltskin, is true to her word. Nothing is stronger than a promise, after all. Generally, the people of Fairytale Land whom are aware of Belle’s situation have sympathy for her, but contrary to their condolences aimed toward herself, the brunette has been shown to display her own sympathy for even the worst kinds of people, such as her captor while not really feeling any for herself.

Easily she could be called clumsy, having broken a tea cup on her first night ‘on the job’ and her tumbles from time to time whilst cleaning, most notably into Rumpelstiltskin’s arms while trying to open the drapes. Although elegant, she is certainly a bit of a klutz.

That is not to say that her kindness is something that isn’t also a flaw of hers. Belle’s naïve sweet nature is what ultimately ends up losing her what she has found to be the most precious thing in her life. Although she seemed to be wary at first glance, her inability to turn away from the Queen is considered her downfall and the reason for all that she finds herself losing. Her biggest flaw is the strength of her love for Rumpelstiltskin, in the end it blinds her otherwise generally sensible choices in life and leaves her with regret and a broken heart.

SAMPLES;
Action/Journal Sample:
( coughing fills the speakers, a groan shortly follows as Belle rolls over onto her side from having just had her back introduced to the cobblestone grounds, it leaving her breathless for a short time. now, regaining her lungs’ primary functions, she hoists herself to her feet and gently brushing her hands along the soft fabric of her dress, looks around the strange new town she’s found herself in )

Odd… ( she muses to herself as she walks her eyes along the cityscape, shocked at the feel and look of the town. it’s certainly not anything she’s ever seen before, compared to the village she was originally from and even Dark Castle, this place is a whole new kind of adventure for one whom didn’t think she would ever be on any sort )

Where am I…? ( wary of her surroundings, the woman frowns, lifting her hands to cup her face as she suddenly chokes on a sob )

Papa… ( a sob ) …I never should have made that deal…

RP Sample:
It hit her all at once.

The sky had changed, began to look strange and suddenly seemed as though it was crumbling in the air itself high above. How long would the folks of Fairytale Land have before it began to break apart and spill to the ground below? Up above, blues faded to gray, slowly growing darker with each seconds’ passing. Soon, the bright afternoon sky had vanished before her eyes and had become darker than the black it was during the nights here, with no stars in the sky to illuminate the black cover.

Breath hitching with fear, the brunette stared in horror as everything began to follow in the sky’s footsteps, changing from their luminous colors to fade into darkness. Jerking her head back, Belle’s gaze locked onto the castle home to creature that she had come to love. Was this his doing? The man had so many spells and potions at his disposal, he could do almost literally everything, it wouldn’t be too far from reality to think that this might be something caused by Rumpelstiltskin.

“He can’t be…” she muttered to herself, stumbling a few steps backward, lifting her hands to her mouth.

Was all this darkness some kind of reaction to her telling him that he would regret everything that had come to pass? Shaking her head, not wanting to be the cause of such darkness and pain, Belle moved to take a step forward — she would have to go back to Rumpelstiltskin’s kingdom, talk to him and maybe set things straight. The whole of the land didn’t need to suffer darkness just because she had told him he would have to suffer being alone forever now that she was leaving.

But it didn’t come to that. Her leg wouldn’t move when she urged it to, nor would the other. Something had touched them when she was lost in her fear; Belle hadn’t even noticed it happen but becoming aware of the frigid sensation coiling around her calves resulted with waves of shivers crawling along her spine. Her skin began to go cold and prickled as tendrils wrapped around her limbs, moved up higher, trapping her around her waist, arms…

“Wait, please—” her chest grew tight as warmth left her body and shadow coiled around her body, beginning to swallow the woman up. The ground began to give way beneath her feet, or rather; she began to sink into the blackness that had become the earth below. Breath caught in her throat, Belle, finding herself unable to form any words to plead for her release, turned her blue eyes desperately looking at the castle until the fortress began to blur, vision failing her, everything fading to darkness—

Rumpelstiltskin!
